Here is a quick rule. If the box sits on a shelf, cardboard wins on print and cost. If the box travels through the mail or holds weight, corrugated protects better.

Standard Cardboard Stock and Thickness

Cardboard stock is measured two ways. GSM (grams per square metre) is the weight. Pt, or points, is the thickness, where one point equals a thousandth of an inch. A higher number in either one means a heavier, stiffer board. As a rough guide, divide GSM by about 25 to get points.

Most printed boxes use paperboard between 14pt and 24pt. The sizes go up in twos: 14pt, 16pt, 18pt, 20pt, 22pt, and 24pt. To picture it, 24pt board is about as thick as a credit card.
