Stock Selection for a Product That Keeps Moving

Soap is a live product for weeks after it leaves the mould. Saponification finishes, water evaporates, the bar loses 3–5% of its mass during cure, and unsaponified oils and essential oils keep migrating outward. Package it wrong and you get grease shadows on the panel, a loose rattle inside the box, or a warped face by week six.

Brown kraft: Unbleached, recyclable, Blue Box accepted nationwide. The default for handmade and small-batch lines because the substrate carries the story before anyone reads the label. Prints well in one or two Pantone spot colours; four-colour photography goes muddy on the brown base, so build artwork around line work and type. See our kraft boxes range.

White kraft: Same recycled base, printable white face. Keeps the eco claim and holds sharper registration for detailed artwork.

SBS / C1S cardboard (12pt–24pt): Solid bleached sulphate, coated one side. Smooth, crisp fold, clean dot gain, handles gradients and photography. The retail skincare standard. Thickness options are on our cardboard soap boxes.

CCNB: Clay coated news back. Recycled core, white printable face, grey reverse. The cost-efficient choice for volume runs where the inside face is never seen.

Black board: Dyed through. Foil stamping and blind embossing register better on black than on any other substrate. Gift sets and limited editions.

E-flute corrugated: Fluted inner liner for crush resistance. Use it for direct-to-consumer shipping via Canada Post or Purolator, for gift sets, or for bars over 150g. It absorbs what a courier hands out between the GTA and Whitehorse.

Tell us bar weight, Set schedule and whether the box ships or sits on a shelf, and we will name the stock. That advice costs nothing.

Box Styles for Soap

Straight tuck end (STE): Both flaps tuck the same direction. Uninterrupted front panel. The shelf retail standard.

Reverse tuck end (RTE): Flaps tuck opposite directions. Less board waste on the die, faster to hand-assemble. Best when you are packing 400 bars yourself on a Sunday.

Auto-bottom / Crash lock: Pre-glued base that pops open. Worth the tooling once your fulfilment time matters more than your unit cost.

Sleeve and Tray: Printed band over an inner tray. Two printable surfaces and a slow reveal. Gift sets and premium lines.

Window Boxes: Acetate or PLA panel so the swirl, embed, oatmeal or activated charcoal layer sells itself. Full options on our die cut soap boxes.

Half-wrap belly band: Printed band across the middle, both ends open. Least board, lowest unit cost, and the customer can smell the bar before buying. This outsells everything else at farmers' markets and the One of a Kind Show.

Mailer Boxes: Locking closure, optional insert, built for the Shopify and Etsy unboxing shot. See mailer boxes.

Counter Display: Open-top units holding 12–24 bars for Faire wholesale accounts, spa retail and gift shops. Details on soap display boxes.

Sizing: Measure the Cured Bar

Measure after cure, not out of the mould — a box cut to wet dimensions will read loose by week four. Give us L × W × H in inches or millimetres. If you shrink-wrap or wrap in tissue first, say so and we add tolerance. Unsure? Mail a bar to Wellington St and we will measure it.

Sizes that come through this shop most often:

  • 3.5" × 2.25" × 1" (standard rectangular cold process bar)

  • 3.5" × 2.5" × 1.25" (chunky artisan cut)

  • 2.75" × 2.75" × 1" (square bar)

  • 4" × 2.5" × 1.25" (oversized shea butter or salt bar)

  • 3.25" × 1.75" × 1.25" (shampoo bar)

  • 2" × 2" × 0.75" (hotel and guest size)

None of these are limits. They are just the repeat orders.

Printing, Colour and Finishing

Offset litho for volume — plates, tight registration, low unit cost past a few thousand. Digital for short runs, reprints and seasonal variants with no plate charge. UV where you want ink sitting proud of the surface.

Give us the Pantone number for your brand colour and we run it as a spot ink rather than approximating it in CMYK. The difference shows the moment your box sits beside your own labels and insert cards.

Gloss lamination shrugs off scuffs and humidity, which matters for a product that lives in a bathroom. Matte reads calmer. Soft touch is the one people cannot stop handling. Spot UV on a logo over matte is the cheapest way to look like a $20 bar. Foil stamping and embossing belong on gift and limited runs.

Straight talk: lamination is a plastic film. If your pitch is compostable, skip it — take uncoated kraft or an aqueous water-based coating instead. We would rather say that up front than sell you a finish that argues with your own brand.

Canadian Labelling: The Part Nobody Else Mentions

A bar of soap sold in Canada is regulated as a cosmetic under the Food and Drugs Act and the Cosmetic Regulations, administered by Health Canada. That brings obligations no US template accounts for:

A Cosmetic Notification Form (CNF) filed with Health Canada, no later than 10 days after first sale.

An INCI ingredient list, headed bilingually as Ingredients / Ingrédients.

Bilingual mandatory panels under the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act — product identity and net quantity in both English and French, in metric.

Cannabis-infused soap adds the standardized cannabis symbol, the yellow health warning panel, THC/CBD content, plain-packaging colour and finish limits, and no appeal to young persons.

Your regulatory advisor decides what must appear. Our job is the physical side: whether a bilingual ingredient panel and a warning box both fit on a 2.25" face at a legible point size, whether your French copy will still register cleanly at 6pt on kraft, and whether the panel layout survives the die-line. Send approved artwork and we flag what will not reproduce before plates get cut.

This is also why our CBD soap boxes, cannabis soap packaging and marijuana soap boxes run as separate lines, Check our full CBD packaging Canada service.

Eco-Friendly Soap Boxes and Canadian Recycling Rules

Canadian buyers turn the box over and check. Our kraft, CCNB and recycled stocks are accepted in municipal Blue Box streams nationwide. FSC-certified board, soy-based inks and uncoated builds are all available.

Two things worth knowing. First, laminated board is contested at many Canadian municipal facilities — if curbside recyclability is part of your claim, go uncoated. Second, extended producer responsibility is now live in Ontario through the RPRA, with other provinces following, so the packaging you put on the market is increasingly your obligation to account for. Keep claims specific and defensible — "100% recycled paper, Blue Box accepted" beats a green leaf icon that means nothing. Full material list on our eco friendly boxes.
