What Is a Packaging Sleeve?
A packaging sleeve is a printed paper or board wrap that slides around a box, tray or product. It has no top, bottom or tuck flaps, so it costs less to print than a six-sided box while covering the surface customers actually look at.
That is the whole appeal. You buy plain kraft or white boxes at stock prices, then print only the wrap. Change the artwork for a holiday run or a new scent and your boxes stay the same. Canadian brands use sleeves on soap bars, candles, socks, bakery trays, subscription mailers and gift sets.

Packaging Sleeve or Belly Band? The Difference Matters
A belly band is a narrow wrap that covers the middle of a product, usually 2 to 4 inches wide. A full sleeve is wider and covers most of the box face, sometimes the whole depth.
Use a belly band when the box already looks good and you only need your logo, a barcode and a short message. Use a full sleeve when you want the wrap to carry all the artwork and the box underneath is plain.

Every sleeve is cut to your product, but these are the sizes Canadian buyers order most often. Width is the face height of the wrap. Length is the full run of paper before folding, including overlap.

How to Measure a Sleeve That Fits
Most sleeve reprints happen because of measuring, not printing. Use this formula:
Length = 2 x (box width + box height) + 25 mm overlap
Three points that catch people out:
- Measure the packed box, not the product. Board thickness adds a few millimetres, and a full box bulges slightly.
- Add 1 to 1.5 mm of clearance so the sleeve slides on without tearing. Go to 5 mm on thicker corrugated boxes.
- Never skip the overlap. Without a glue tab there is no seam to bond.
Our design team checks these numbers against your dieline before anything goes to press, and we send a digital mockup for approval. Ask for a physical sample if the fit is tight. Test-fitting one sleeve is cheaper than reprinting a thousand.
Stock, Thickness and Finish Options
Sleeves run on the same stocks as our boxes:
- Cardboard and SBS in 14pt, 16pt and 18pt for retail sleeves that need a clean white print surface
- Kraft for a natural, recyclable look on soap, candle and eco lines
- E-flute corrugated where the wrap adds grip or insulation, as on cup sleeves
- Food-grade stock with grease-resistant coating for bakery, deli and meal prep trays
Finish the wrap with matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping, embossing or debossing. Add a die-cut window to show the product, scoring so the folds sit square, and a peel-and-seal adhesive tab if you want your team to assemble sleeves by hand.
Printing runs offset in CMYK or Pantone, one side or both. The inside face is useful space. Brands print care instructions, a discount code or a thank-you note there.

What a Sleeve Costs Against a Printed Box
A sleeve uses roughly half the paper of a six-sided box and takes a smaller press sheet, so the unit price sits well below a fully printed carton.
The saving compounds if you sell a range. One plain box size covers eight products, and you print eight sleeves instead of eight separate box runs. Seasonal artwork becomes a sleeve reprint rather than a full packaging change.
