What Are Noodle Boxes?
A noodle box is a folded paperboard container made for hot noodle dishes. The familiar shape is the tapered Chinese takeout pail, which locks at the base and opens flat into a bowl. Kraft and cardboard versions hold heat, resist sauce, and stay shut inside a delivery bag.
In Canada, they matter more each year. Ramen, pho, lo mein, and pad thai move through Uber Eats and SkipTheDishes every day, and foam containers are off the table under federal single-use plastic rules. Paper noodle packaging is the compliant option Canadian kitchens have moved to.
Noodle Box Styles We Print
Not every noodle sells in the same container. Pick the shape that matches how the food leaves your kitchen.
Chinese Takeout Pail (Oyster Pail):
The classic tapered pail with the folded top and the wire bail handle. One sheet of board, glue-free base, opens flat into a bowl. Best for lo mein, chow mein, pad thai, and anything you want the customer to eat straight out of the box. We build it with or without the handle.
Handle-Free Tuck-Top Noodle Box:
Same tapered body, no wire. It stacks tighter in a delivery bag and costs less per unit. Good for high-volume counters where speed matters more than presentation.
Gable-Top Noodle Box:
The peaked top with the die-cut handle built into the board. Reads more like a gift or a meal kit than a takeout container. Popular for ramen kits, noodle bundles, and event catering.
Bowl and Sleeve:
A round or square base with a printed sleeve wrapped around it. The sleeve carries your branding and your ingredient copy, so you can run one plain base across the whole menu and change only the sleeve. Cheaper way to launch six flavours at once.
Window Noodle Box:
A die-cut window with a clear PET or PLA film insert so the customer sees the dish. Works for grab-and-go fridges in grocery hot bars and convenience chains.
Corrugated Noodle Box:
E-flute wall for hot, heavy servings that need insulation and crush strength. Choose this when the order is stacked five deep in a courier bag.

Measure the food, not the old box. Fill height matters more than footprint. A pail filled to the fold line spills; a pail with 15 mm of headspace does not.

For hot soupy noodles, 18pt and up is the safe floor. Below that the base flexes when a driver picks the bag up by the handles.
Grease, Steam, and The Coating Question
Three things attack a noodle box: oil from the sauce, steam from the heat, and time in a courier bag.
Your options:
- Uncoated kraft or SBS: Fine for dry noodles, noodle snack packs, and instant noodle retail packs. Not for anything oily.
- Water-based (aqueous) coating: Adds light moisture resistance and a matte or gloss finish. Handles condensation, not standing broth.
- PE or PLA lining: A thin film laminated to the food-contact side. This is the reliable answer for wet noodles. PE-lined board goes to recycling streams that accept it; PLA-lined board is designed for industrial composting, not backyard bins.
Also plan for steam. A sealed pail full of hot noodles turns into a sauna and softens the board. Small vent perforations in the top fold fix it, and we can add them to any dieline.
Printing That Survives The Delivery Box
- CMYK offset for photo-heavy artwork and full-colour menus.
Pantone (PMS) spot colour when your brand red has to match your storefront and your cups.
- 1 or 2 colour kraft printing for a clean logo on brown board at the lowest cost.
- Soy and vegetable-based inks on request.
- Finishes: matte, gloss, aqueous, spot UV, gold or silver foil, embossing and debossing.
Practical Notes: Ink goes on the outside face, not the food-contact face. And heavy dark solids show scuffing on kraft after handling, so a matte coat over dark artwork is worth the small upcharge.
